An Unusual Kannawidan Festival
Excited for different products? Different kinds of delicious food? How about the beautiful clothes made by our fellow Ilokanos? They can all be seen at one place and with only one event here in Ilocos Sur, the Kannawidan Festival.
Kannawidan Festival is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province. As well as To show and share the province’s magnificent treasures to the whole world. The festival highlights our cultural traditions. A mass is usually held on opening day at St. Paul Metropolitan Church followed by a procession of the Patron Saints around Vigan City. It is the traditional way of Ilokano’s of giving thanks to the Almighty for the bountiful blessing and also for the rich heritage of the city, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos. This event showcases the deep-rooted religiosity of the townsfolk.
Along within the celebration is a few competitions like rodeo , track and field , design and painting and also of course street dancing will always be present. The most popular event is the Miss and Little Miss Saniata ti Ilocos Sur, where people support their representatives per municipality in this competition. Different artist and famous personalities can be seen too. You can also experience the dancing fountain and firework display. As said above product from different places including food, furnitures, clothings are also present. This events is always planned well by the province’s authorities and of course our governor, Gov. Ryan Singson.
But as of now , this big festival was celebrated in a different way due to unsafe environment. Social and mass gatherings are restricted , use of face masks and social distancing was implemented since the COVID - 19 pandemic started. Still, local products can be seen , but competitions were done virtually, and for limited persons only. People practiced the health protocols in order to avoid the virus.
We may not experienced the festival we usually do now , I’m sure for the next celebrations , when the pandemic will disappear ,we will experience a greater and much exciting festival. Right now , let’s just celebrate and commemorate the festival in our heart and mind with a smile in our face.
