Create To Preserve

To promote awareness of the value of the historic town of Vigan ,Binatbatan Festival or The Viva Vigan Festival of Arts is celebrated during the first week of the month of May.It is the fruit of the reunion of residents staying in Metro Manila who formed a group called KaiVigan in 1993. The festcal began when an epidemic killed 934 residents that started on November 12 and ended December 15 ,30 years after a chapel was built in 1852 in the cemetery of Vigan. For the past sixteen years, the festival of arts has been successful in drumming up attention for Vigan’s ancestral houses mostly located on the heritage site of the town. With the help of national and local agencies, as well as media, arts and non-governmental supporters, the festival has also succeeded in promoting other aspects of Vigan. It benefited the whole tourism industry of the northern region, bringing in tens of thousands of local and foreign tourists curious to explore and have a “northern experience.”

Viva Vigan’s week-long festivities have both religious and secular importance. It was made to strengthen resolve to preserve and protect this heritage site and also to commemorate St. Joseph, patron saint of workers. It was also to celebrate one of the industries that kept residents alive – abel Iloco hand-loom weaving. It is the product that is mostly emphasized in this celebration. Due to the pandemic and the alarming cases of COVID - 19, activities were conducted differently this time - different means virtually. Families are the contestants of street dancing competition, and there is also hiphop competition. There is also a mass at Simbaan na Bassit. Parts of Calle Crisologo were designed beautifully with the main product, abel iloko which made the place more lively and historic.

In order to preserve our culture and history , everyone must do something. It must be kept alive. Cultural heritage is central to protecting our sense of who we are. It gives us an irrefutable connection to the past – to certain social values, beliefs, customs and traditions, that allows us to identify ourselves with others and deepen our sense of unity, belonging and national pride.
